Hawaii does not have a single police force or State police. Each of its four counties has their own police departments. The largest department in the state is the Honolulu Police Department, located on the island of Oahu.

Minimum Requirements:

1) Must be a Citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States.

2) Be at least 20 years of age.

3) Possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent.

4) Possess a valid Driver's License.

5) Must meet the medical standards established for City and County of Honolulu Police with regards to vision, hearing, nervous system, cardiovascular, etc.

Benefits:  A Metropolitan Police Recruit receive a salary while in the Police Academy. After one year of satisfactory service, Recruits are eligible for promotion to Metropolitan Police Officer I, plus uniform and weapon allowances. And for those eligible, car allowance, night differential, and extra pay for off-duty work. Additional benefits provided by the department include 21 days a year, cumulative up to 90 days. Unused leave can be accumulated and converted into retirement credits. 13 paid holidays a year, 14 in election years. Free employee life insurance and children's dental plan. The City pays part of the premium for a medical plan, adult dental plan, prescription drug plan and vision care plans, and an option to defer the premiums from your pay before taxes. A joint contributory plan for retirement after 25 years of service or at age 55 is also offered.

Selections:  Eligibles are referred to the Police Department in order of test scores, starting with the highest score, as vacancies occur. You will be referred when your score is reached.

You will be required to complete a series of psychological and behavioral assessments. Oral interviews will be conducted by both the department and a police psychologist. The Police Department will conduct a thorough investigation of your character and background. A polygraph test will be administered. You will be required to pass a medical examination and a drug screening test. Illegal use of drugs is grounds for disqualification.
