Minimum Requirements:

1) Be a U.S. Citizen.

2) Possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License upon date of appointment.

3) Must be at least 21 years of age at time of application.

4) High School diploma or successful completion of GED examination.

5) Must be willing to accept assignment anywhere in the State of Arizona.

6) Minimum vision of 20/80 in each eye, corrected to 20/20 by glasses or hard contact lenses, OR a minimum of 20/200 in each eye, corrected to 20/20 by soft contact lenses.

Benefits:  Upon graduation and certification, cadets are promoted to Officer I.  In addition, Highway Patrol Officers also receive 15 to 21 days per year of vacation time based on length of service, 15 days per year of sick leave, 10 paid holidays per year, and the option of several health insurance plans. The Department pays a major portion of the premium for employee coverage as well as for family coverage. Normal retirement after 20 years of service.

Selections:  Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be invited to take the written examination. Applicants passing the written exam with a score of 85% or above will progress to the physical fitness test. The physical fitness test has established norms for pushups, sit-ups, flexibility, and a 1.5 mile run. Applicants successfully passing the physical fitness test will proceed to "B-PAD" which is a videotaping of a candidate’s responses to job related scenarios. A passing score of 70% is required.

Applicant successfully completing the first three steps will be placed on an eligibility list ranked in order of final score. The remaining steps include: background investigation, polygraph investigation, psychological evaluation, and medical exam.

Applicants who are hired as Cadet Officers are assigned to the Arizona Law Enforcement Academy for approximately 17 weeks of training. After graduation, new officers attend the Department’s Advanced Basic Academy before being assigned to duty stations at various locations throughout the state. They must complete a 12 month probationary period which includes 8 weeks of field training.
