POSITION: CRIMINAL INVESTIGATOR (SPECIAL AGENT)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:  Criminal Investigators (Special Agents) plan and conduct investigations, often undercover, concerning possible violations of criminal and administrative provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act and other statutes under the United States Code. These officers carry firearms, make arrests, prepare investigative reports, present cases to the United States Attorneys for prosecution and give testimony in judicial and administrative proceedings. They maintain liaison and work closely with Federal, State, and local agencies. Criminal Investigators are located throughout the United States, including Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Most positions are located in metropolitan areas which have larger offices.

TRAINING:  Criminal Investigators (Special Agents) receive a 14 to 18 week Immigration Officer’s Basic Training Course at one of the Service’s training centers and pass a course of study in immigration law, nationality law, Spanish language, police training, and branch specific operational training.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Must be a US citizen, in addition candidates must have, for three of the last five years immediately before applying for the position (1) resided in the United States; or (2)worked in the United States Government as an employee overseas in a Federal or Military capacity; or (3) been a dependent of a US Federal or Military employee serving overseas. Applicant must be under 37 years of age. Applicants must have three years of progressively responsible experience or possess a bachelor’s degree in any field from an accredited college or university, or possess a combination of qualifying education and experience. Must Pass a written test. Must possess a valid state’s drivers license. Must pass a physical exam and background investigation.
